About
Our Story
Mother Moon began at the table long before we knew it, beneath a moon that has always symbolized reunion and family in Chinese culture — carried forward by generations of mothers before us. Our tiles are an artful blend of that history and craftsmanship, each suit and symbol researched from real tradition rather than retrofitted meaning. A fresh, contemporary aesthetic is woven throughout, distinctly tied to where it all began. Elevate your game with Mother Moon, where old memories are honored and new ones are made.
A return to craft
Mahjong was once a crafted object during the Qing Dynasty. A full set of tiles required weeks of skilled labor — bone-and-bamboo construction, hand-carved faces, cured and finished by artisans. A fine set was a family heirloom, inherited and displayed, signaling care and taste as much as it enabled a game.
Mother Moon returns to that register. Our flagship tiles are resin, hand-painted, with sixteen colors for a vibrant aesthetic, weighted and sized for the modern game. Each design is inspired by an original source — a Song Dynasty painter, a Suzhou garden motif, a Tang poem.
Behind Mother Moon
Mother Moon is the work of Alan Chun and Alice Woo — longtime mahjong players who grew up around the game and set out to build a set that tells a story of the culture and origins of mahjong.
Mahjong has always been about people — played by families, friends and communities, under full moons, across generations who understood mahjong is more than just a game. Our work is a love letter to our culture and the generations who came before us.
